Stop Telling Yourself Stories

Stop Telling Yourself Stories

Our minds can go wild in any situation when we allow ourselves to make up stories.  Our imagination goes rampant when we have been wronged or even overlooked by someone.  The committee in our head can go a million miles a minute to make up the wildest story that confirms whatever beliefs we may have.  There is an example where a professional speaker was meeting with a female celebrity after a speaking engagement.  The speaker was nervous about how she did and what was thought of her as they were walking together.  The celebrity looked down and let out a big sigh and immediately the speaker made up a story in her mind that her speech was terrible and that she was a disappointment.  Later that day, the speaker found out that the celebrity was looking down at her feet and was disturbed about her toe polish and that she needed a pedicure. Can you see how this woman spiraled down just because of a story she made up in her mind? We can genuinely make ourselves crazy with our silly fabricated internal stories.

Next time you are in a situation where you start to make up a story, stop the storytelling and remind yourself that it is all made up.  Chances are pretty high that there is genuinely no truth to what you have told yourself.  Give others the benefit of the doubt instead of making you the problem, or the victim. Start catching yourself before your internal story gets out of hand. If you have the opportunity, ask questions of the other person to clarify what you may be experiencing.  Asking for clarification from someone is much easier than assuming what they mean, and will save you from heartache or frustration. You may have heard the saying ‘ASSUMING makes an ASS out of U and ME.’ You never know what is going on in someone else’s life.
